Barolo

2001 Michele Chiarlo Nebbiolo – Barolo, Italy
Finding Barolo in the half bottle is like looking for the Carmel McDonalds. Luckily, Michele Chiarlo allows us to experience the power of Barolo without committing to a bottle. Try it with filet mignon and Gorgonzola sauce and shed tears of happiness. As they say, the robust with… the robust. If this were a person, it’d be a sophisticated old man who is kind of grumpy until...

2001 Vietti Castiglione Nebbiolo – Barolo, Italy
This wine is masculine and displays the truffle, tar and rose petal nuances synonymous with Barolo. Somehow the viscous mouth feel has a similarity to Pinot Noir, just a lot more tannic. This wine needs food. Last tasted 2007 Drink now-2015 

2001 Barolo Sperss $435 - Real masculine and tannic. It was young and had a real dry finish. This wine doesn't need food but I would be pretty hungry after having a sip of this tough guy. Last tasted 2/17/06 Drink now-2015 

2001 Barolo, Vietti - It was really masculine and had a little sour edge at first. The tannins were integrated with truffles and coffee notes. There was a weird black tar character overshadowed by vanilla and something medicinal. For $80 on a wine list, you should be pounding this. Last tasted 2007 Drink now-2015 

Wine and Waves

Wine and Waves
I'm lucky to be a 31-year-old surf punk that gets to sample rare wines like the 1922 Pol Roger, the 1959 Petrus and the 2001 D.R.C. Richebourg--that doesn't mean those wines are always good, or worth the price. Since I've worked as a sommelier (in Monterey, CA) for high-end restaurants like Casanova, the Sardine Factory, and Marinus, I've honed my palate and I can choose a good bottle that won't break the bank. When I have enough time and money, I like to travel with my girl Lindsay Jackson to places with great wine and waves. I'm a certified sommelier (Court of Master Sommeliers) and am available to drink wine. Call: 831-521-8606 or e-mail: pwetterau@gmail.com
