Coonawarra Shiraz

2003 Bowen Shiraz, Coonawarra $26 (10/6/07) – a dark wine with enough structure to age and not enough to age for very long. It was slightly watery, but it wasn’t as over-extracted as most Australian wines. There wasn’t enough tannin to be considered Cote Rotie, but the as austere as the Aussie’s have ever done. You could taste the viognier. This wine wasn’t as well like by Amanda’s girlfriend. Apparently, she likes the pruney Rosemount Estate better. I couldn’t stand how bad that wine was. Clare Valley Shiraz

2006 Leasingham Shiraz, Clare Valley ($10) - Lots of bacon fat and blueberry cobbler. Steve thought it was "like" a Cote Rotie, I ate it with a skirt steak. Obviously, he thought it was New World. Last tasted 2007 Drink now

McClaren Shiraz

2003 D'arenberg Shiraz/ Mourvedre (50/50), McClaren Valley, Australia 8/24/07 $15 @ Neilsen's - this tasted much better out of a Burgundy bowl and it definitely had a high alcohol concentration. The port-like strawberry jam seemed delicate in the glass. It was real dark and had a burnt fig character. The neighbor Steve Kelly enjoyed a glass. It seems like if you tell a customer what they might get in the wine, they won't complain. Last tasted 2007 Drink now-2013 

Wine and Waves

Wine and Waves
I'm lucky to be a 31-year-old surf punk that gets to sample rare wines like the 1922 Pol Roger, the 1959 Petrus and the 2001 D.R.C. Richebourg--that doesn't mean those wines are always good, or worth the price. Since I've worked as a sommelier (in Monterey, CA) for high-end restaurants like Casanova, the Sardine Factory, and Marinus, I've honed my palate and I can choose a good bottle that won't break the bank. When I have enough time and money, I like to travel with my girl Lindsay Jackson to places with great wine and waves. I'm a certified sommelier (Court of Master Sommeliers) and am available to drink wine. Call: 831-521-8606 or e-mail: pwetterau@gmail.com
